The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Zagreb Elite Series Chess set. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 3.875" King with a 1.75" diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a beautiful finish. The design of the Zagreb Elite Series Chess set is an adaptation of the most popular Chess set used at major international Chess tournaments throughout the 1950s and 1960s, most notably the World Championship Candidates Match that was held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959.
The House of Staunton has taken several minor improvements to the design of the Chess set, including the ability to replace the ball finial (cross) atop the King with the more recognizable Formée cross to conform to modern Western tournament praxis. The Chess set comes with both styles of King finials (crosses) that are easily removable, allowing its owner to option to change between both styles. The Chess set has been designed to withstand years of use (and abuse), as it lacks many of the ornate details commonly found on Chess Sets that can be susceptible to damage in the heat of battle. For example, the Chess set features reinforced Pawn collars, stylized Knights and minimal Queen crenellations for unmatched durability. The Zagreb Elite Series Chess set is ideal for those that are interested in both the historical importance of the game of Chess, as well as those looking for an attractive Chess set that is both economical and durable.

Wow! What a QUALITY chess set for a little over $100 on clearance. This is a chess set that I'm proud to own. The pieces go great with my wood board, which as 2.25" squares. These pieces are HEFTY. I would characterize them as double weighted, with fairly good balance if you're into speed chess. I love the feature of the interchangeable finial on the king. He'll always wear his cross though, instead of the ball. I got my order just 2 business days later, nice package. The pieces came securely package in a box-within-a-box. The pieces were individually zip locked in a small bag and resting in a foam cut-out. Very nicely done! The set exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for an heirloom quality set and don't want to spend the kind of money that you spent on your first car, you can't go wrong with the Zagreb Elite.

Couldnt be happier with this purchase. Im a huge fan of the Zagreb design, tbh its my favorite & tied with the Dubrovnik imo. most of the color schemes on zagreb sets are very light with ebony or very light with like a rosewood but the ebony & rosewood combo looks fantastic. I prefer it actually with two darker tones. The interchangeable finials is just an awesome little touch to change it up when you want. The weight of the pieces feel nice & they are just pleasant to play with. I cant say enough good things about this set which is really making me consider getting the other Reykjavik Elite series set as well in the same color combo considering im so impressed with this set

The pictures are accurate, the chess pieces are nicely weighted. I feel like I got a good value for the money. Each piece is around $5 per.
