A Majestic Tribute to the First American Chess Congress - The Triumph of Paul Morphy
The House of Staunton is proud to present The Congress Luxury Chess Pieces, an extraordinary set created to honor one of the most important milestones in American chess history - the First American Chess Congress of 1857. These exquisite Chessmen stand as a refined and reverent tribute to an event that not only shaped the future of American chess but also heralded the meteoric rise of its greatest native-born prodigy, Paul Morphy.
This luxurious series captures the dignity, tradition, and spirit of competitive excellence that defined the Congress. Designed in a style evocative of mid-19th-century American chess culture, the pieces radiate a timeless elegance, offering collectors and players alike a tangible connection to an event that was, in its day, a defining moment for chess in the United States.
A Historic Tournament, A Legendary Victory
Organized by Daniel Willard Fiske, the First American Chess Congress was held in New York from October 6 to November 10, 1857. The sixteen strongest players in the United States were invited to compete in what would become America’s first great national chess tournament. Among these luminaries were: Colonel Charles Mead, Chairman, George Hammond, Frederic Perrin, Daniel Willard Fiske, Hiram Kennicott, Hardman Philips Montgomery, Hubert Knott, Louis Paulsen, William Allison, Theodore Lichtenhein, James Thompson, Charles Henry Stanley, Alexander Beaufort Meek, Samuel Robert Calthrop, Napoleon Marache, William James Fuller, Paul Morphy, and Benjamin Raphael.
Out of this distinguished field, one name rose head and shoulders above the rest - Paul Charles Morphy, whose brilliance, clarity, and commanding strength left an indelible mark on the congress and on chess history itself.
Paul Morphy’s Unmatched Triumph
First prize for the tournament was $300, a significant sum for the era. Yet Morphy, ever the gentleman, declined the monetary reward and instead accepted a magnificent silver service consisting of a pitcher, four goblets, and a tray. This prize was presented to him by none other than Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., adding yet another touch of prestige to an already legendary occasion.
Morphy’s performance during the Congress remains one of the brightest moments in American chess heritage - a triumph of intellect, creativity, and effortless mastery.
A Legacy Remembered
Though the First American Chess Congress has long since passed into history, the event continues to stand as a landmark of early American chess culture. The Congress Luxury Chess Pieces have been created as a fitting and dignified tribute to that monumental chapter. These Chessmen evoke the spirit of the time: stately, refined, and steeped in the deep heritage of the game.
They are more than a set of Chess pieces - they are a celebration of a golden moment in American chess, of a young genius whose brilliance captivated the world, and of a tournament that helped define a national passion for the game.

Kingside Stamping
What is Kingside Stamping?

Kingside stamping was part of the original Staunton Pattern design, consisting of a King's Crown stamped into the Rook and Knight that started on the right side (or King's Side) of the chessboard. In Descriptive notation, it is useful for distinguishing between the Kingside and Queen's Side pieces.
Whether you use them in your chess strategy or for historical decoration, we offer kingside Stamping on some of our chess sets!
