Our production is a detailed replica of an original Bone set manufactured around 1850 by Jaques and purchased at a 1990s London auction. English chess master, Howard Saunton, promoted this set at the first international chess tournament in 1851. It's clearly distinguishable pieces soon became the competition standard known as the 'Staunton' set.

    Crisp, clean and stylish

    At first I passed over this set thinking it as too simple and almost cartoonish. Then I had a second thought and doubled back. The set is so pleasant to look at. The design is stylish yet simple without any distracting flair. The dark wash gives all the character and detail of an antique. The red side is especially sharp and nice to look at on a black and white board where my old blacks were washing out on their same colored squares. This is absolutely my favorite set so far. Definitely recommend.

    My Favorite Chess Set that I have ever owned!

    Honestly - I really did not like the look of this set in the pictures. The Knights looked fat and clumsy - and the slender design features seemed really weak looking and plain. When I was trying to figure out the ultimate possible chess set to play on for long hours - that would cause the least eye strain - I realized that the most important feature was the board - and so I chose a board that had close to black squares alternating with a deep brown wood - and talk about easy and pleasant to look at with a satin finish - I mean - NO EYE STRAIN AFTER HOURS OF PLAY. So then I realized that the ultimate chess set for this board would be one where the colors of the squares on the board and the pieces were totally different so that no pieces would "blur" with the square color. Although a red and white board - even with a satin finish - causes significant eye strain after about 2 hours - chess pieces do not have near the surface area - and when they don't reflect anything but their color - (not glossy or shiny) and have the right satin finish - even red and white pieces are easy to look at and the color combination of red and white satin finish pieces against black and dark brown squares is the most pleasant experience I have ever had for long term visuals of chess board and chess set. When I got this set - I expected it to look clumsy and mainly bought it for the size and color - and to my surprise - this set looks far more beautiful than any of the pictures - and the pieces are so…
