The 2014 Sinquefield Cup is the first-ever Super GM tournament to be held in Saint Louis, and it will feature six of the best players on the planet including: GM Magnus Carlsen, GM Levon Aronian, GM Veselin Topolov, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Fabiano Caruana. It is a double round-robin tournament.
To commemorative this event, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis partnered with the House of Staunton to create a chess set worthy of the Sinquefield Cup Match. Rex Sinquefield, sponsor of the Sinquefied Cup, was an admirer (and proud owner) of the House of Staunton Imperial Collector Chessmen so it was decided that the Chessmen would be based upon our Imperial Collector pattern. Because the players would be playing on DGT Project Electronic Sensor Boards, it was decided that the Chessmen would need to feature a 3.75" King Height, allowing it to fully adhere to both USCF and FIDE tournament rules. And the Sinquefield Cup Commemorative Chessmen were born!

This full-tournament sized Chess set features, crafted out of the highest grade Natural Boxwood and Genuine Ebony, features a 3.75" King with a 1.75" diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with gold embossed English Leather base pads under the Kings that feature the Sinquefield Cup Logo, luxurious billiard cloth base pads on the other Chess pieces and a beautiful finish.
The Collector Series Luxury Chess set has been crafted to replicate the design and proportions of the original Staunton pattern Chessmen, registered by Nathaniel Cooke in March of 1849 and first manufactured by Jaques of London in September 1849. The distinctive feature of this set is the the open-mitered Bishop and original Knight design, which was originally sculpted by the Maestro, Frank A. Camaratta, Jr. With it's downturned head, flowing mane and aggressive facial expression. this is one of the finest Knights ever to grace the 64 square battlefield.

The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton over 10 years ago.
