The 'modern' French Tarrasch arises after the moves 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nd2 c5 4 exd5 Qxd5 and leads to open positions in which both sides have chances to seize the initiative at an early stage. It is a favorite with attacking players such as Jon Speelman, Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand.
