To pamper you, The House of Staunton is proud to offer The First American Chess Congress Series Luxury Commemorative Chess set from the Camaratta Collection. This full-tournament sized chess set features a 4.4" King with a 1.875" diameter base. The chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The chess pieces are heavily weighted with embossed English leather base pads embossed with the Frank Camaratta logo under the Kings, luxurious billiard cloth base pads on the other chess pieces and a beautiful finish.
As with all of our Chessmen, the 4.4" First American Chess Congress Series Luxury Commemorative Chess set exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!
The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton in 1993.
The Chess Set comes with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity and an original manufacturer's plaque indicating the production number, with an adhesive backing that would allow it to be affixed to the underside of a Chess box.
Now Available From The House of Staunton
Included with the purchase of these Chessmen is our new Original Manufacturer's Plaque. Crafted from brass, these plaques feature the engraved production details of each individual Chess set, creating a beautiful, permanent record that is truly worthy of House of Staunton-brand Chessmen.
History of the Chess Pieces
First American Chess Congress Chessmen
The top sixteen American players were invited. Attached are images of the First American Chess Congress 1857. All members of the Congress are shown, including those who did not play in the main tournament. Top row: Colonel Charles Mead (chairman), George Hammond, Frederic Perrin, Daniel Willard Fiske, Hiram Kennicott, and Hardman Philips Montgomery. Left column: Hubert Knott, Louis Paulsen, and William Allison. Bottom row: Theodore Lichtenhein, James Thompson, Charles Henry Stanley, Alexander Beaufort Meek, Samuel Robert Calthrop, and Napoleon Marache. Right column: William James Fuller, Paul Morphy, and Benjamin Raphael.
First prize was $300. Morphy refused any money, but accepted a silver service consisting of a pitcher, four goblets, and a tray. Morphy's prize was given to him by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
The First American Chess Congress is now just a memory, but these exquisite chessmen are a fitting tribute to that historical event.

What is Kingside Stamping?
Kingside stamping was part of the original Staunton Pattern design, consisting of a King's Crown stamped into the Rook and Knight that started on the right side (or King's Side) of the chessboard. In Descriptive notation, it is useful for distinguishing between the Kingside and Queen's Side pieces.
Whether you use them in your chess strategy or for historical decoration, we offer kingside Stamping on some of our chess sets!
