William Steinitz, born in 1836 in the ghetto of Prague, then Austria, came to Vienna in 1858, and soon became one of the best chess players in the city. In 1862, he moved to the chess stronghold of London and made a name for himself by defeating the other top players of the world in competitions. Steinitz is considered the founder of modern chess theory. He analysed master games, formulated rules and laid the foundations for the modern strategic-positional school of chess, which replaced the ‘romantic’ style, characterised by stormy attacks on the king. William Steinitz was not only a prolific player, but also a prolific writer. He wrote a chess column in ‘The Field’ in London. After moving to the USA, he published the chess magazines ‘The International Chess Magazine’ and ‘The Modern Chess Instructor’. In opening theory, variations in the Spanish Game, the Scotch Game and the French Defence are named after Steinitz. In this video course, experts including Dorian Rogozenco, Mihail Marin, Karsten Müller and Oliver Reeh, examine the games of William Steinitz. Let them show you which openings Steinitz chose to play, where his strength in middlegames were, or how he outplayed his opponents in the endgame. He burst onto the scene in 1858 as a 20-year-old and dominated the chess world for two short years, convincingly defeating all the strongest players. After conquering the European chess scene, Morphy was universally recognized as the greatest player of all time. But at the age of 22 he suddenly and permanently retired from serious competition.

Morphy's greatness shone so brightly that 75 years later he was still considered the greatest by world champions Lasker and Capablanca. He is still revered for his brilliant combinations and other contributions to chess. Bobby Fischer called him 'perhaps the most accurate player who ever lived'. Garry Kasparov regarded him as 'the prototype of the strong 20th century grandmaster' and 'the forefather of modern chess'. There are many important biographies and game collections about Morphy. Award-winning chess author Charles Hertan brings us something new - a comprehensive modern biography that delves deep into his fascinating history, unearthing new information about Morphy's origins, intertwined with an in-depth exploration of Morphy's games, often overturning over 160 years of previous analysis.

Hertan uses his experience as a professional psychotherapist to shed new light on Morphy's tragic mental deterioration. The author also examines the state of chess before Morphy, wading into the current debate about the role of the great masters Howard Staunton and Adolf Anderssen in chess history, and whether Morphy's time should rightly be called the 'Romantic Era'.

The Real Paul Morphy brings you everything you need to know about Paul Morphy's life, chess and legacy in a single volume.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0931/7017/2273/files/WGn8LQqiMB4i7BrMDnSZX7XTLtq58M4Nt-uIuhfCepc.jpg?v=1762170309
fire-on-board-full-color-vinyl-chess-board
Fire on Board - Full Color Vinyl Chess Board
Fire on Board

Are you bored with traditional chess boards? The first volume dealt with the Najdorf and Scheveningen variations, while the second concerned itself with the Taimanov, Kan, and Richter-Rauzer variations. In the pages that follow, I round off the collection with the Dragon, Accelerated Dragon, Sveshnikov, Kalashnikov, and Four Knights variations. Each of them is the subject of extensive literature already. So while it is unavoidable that I go into some theoretical details, my intention here (as with the previous volumes) is not to drown you in opening analysis, but rather to focus on general considerations and plans, giving an idea of the interplay between structure and strategy in each of the variations. There is overlap between the strategic elements of the Dragon and its Accelerated cousin in this regard, and between the Sveshnikov and Kalashnikov. But they each get their own chapter nevertheless, because talking about general considerations does not mean it’s clever to eschew granularity entirely. There are individual traits associated with each of the 5 systems.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0931/7017/2273/files/CN3Xxtya3_JTyFCZBv8TZklPBms0Y4mdPHMMYOOZUSM.jpg?v=1762194749
pushing-horizons-the-chess-legacy-of-gm-vladimir-akopian-hardcover
PRE-ORDER – Pushing Horizons: The Chess Legacy of GM Vladimir Akopian - HARDCOVER

I decided to divide the book into four parts. In the first and the most difficult and time-consuming part of the book you will find my memorable games. I emphasize that these are my most memorable games, not my best games so out of 25 games given here there are a few draws and one loss. If I had decided to collect my best games the selection would have been quite different. It should therefore come as no surprise that as many as seven games with world champions found their way into the book.

The second part consists of my 50 most memorable fragments. There you will see both instructive and curious examples. Here too the selection process was quite strict. While the memorable games cover the period of 1991-2010, the fragments cover the span from 1982 till 2016. And since they cover my early years as well, you will find some of them that did not find their way into databases. The third part of the book contains my 75 studies, in 50 of which White must draw and in 25 must win. I have many more but except for a couple of examples I decided not to include the most difficult and interesting rook studies in the book. I have to say that composing studies is much more difficult than problems; it's just a hell of a job.

And finally, the fourth, my favorite part of the book, featuring my 150 best chess problems. I should talk about this in greater detail: I was 12 when I composed my first problem. It was later published in the article by the famous composer and study-maker Alexander Sarychev, whom I had had the great fortune to meet. Yet, despite this positive experience at a young age, it was only much later that I composed a significant number of problems.

And so, I hope that in each of the 300 snippets presented in the book, be it games, fragments, studies or problems, the reader will find something worthwhile. For his opponents, it almost felt as if Capa’s pieces had a gift for condescension, since they had no need to look for opportunity. Opportunity instead came to them. The position’s optimal plan would magically and instantaneously arrange itself into coherent order within Capa’s chess mind.

Capablanca raised the bar on strategic understanding by at least one full generation. Only a handful of players in chess history were a generation ahead in strategic understanding: Morphy, Steinitz, Capablanca, Fischer, Karpov and Carlsen. The subject of this book and series is the third player on the list. While Capablanca was a player of his time, so advanced were his strategic ideas that he was simultaneously a person of our time as well.There has never been a chess player who played blemish-free chess, yet some came close. At its best, Capa’s play appears free from obstacles of any kind. To players of that engine-free era, it sometimes felt as if Capablanca played perfect chess. The first time Emanuel Lasker met Capablanca and played blitz against him, he remarked that to his eyes, Capa never appeared to make a mistake.

Beginners often believe that quiet positions and endings are dead, lifeless realms. Play through Capablanca’s games and we see that they teem with life and possibility, since Capa saw hidden meanings in positions where his rivals were blind. He was especially deadly in quiet positions, since he had the unique ability to kill without seeming to strike a blow. By the time his opponents realized the danger, it was often too late to save themselves.Few of us associate Capablanca with tactics, but maybe we should. He was one of the most tactically aware players of his era, rivaling both Lasker and Alekhine in this metric. Capa’s specialty was short-range combinations, which he almost never missed.

This series will be in three volumes covering the early years, Capa’s prime, and finally the later years. Delightful twists and turns on the board are combined into true works of art. In studies, chess is distilled into its purest form, with all pieces making only the most essential moves. Endgame studies are also useful exercises for practical chess players, as they show patterns, improve calculation, and inspire out-of-the-box thinking.Grandmaster Jan Timman has been fascinated by endgame studies since his youth. The artistry and perfection have always appealed to him. In recent years his focus has shifted from practical chess to composing endgame studies, and many of his compositions have won awards. Timman wrote about composing in The Art of the Endgame. (New In Chess, Revised Edition 2023). In this new book Timman presents the one hundred greatest endgame studies. In five chapters he guides you through masterpieces of increasing difficulty, beginning with elementary endings such as the Réti and Lasker manoeuvres. The studies include themes such as minor) promotion, Zugzwang and domination, all beautifully illustrated and clearly explained. The truth is that more games are lost because of defensive mistakes than strategic ones. By improving your defense, you could do more for your win rate than perhaps any other area of chess study. Mastering Chess Defense by GM Johan Hellsten is the training program you need to prepare for and defend against attacks, both in the short and long term. Inside are 31 chapters that form a compendium of all the defensive skills you need to learn. Specifically, you'll learn to deflect successfully with material or create counterthreats - as the best defense is a good offense. You will find out how to exploit the back rank as a defensive measure and learn to understand the risks of materialism - to grab material or not to grab? You will find safety on flight squares or find "lifelines" that allow you to escape from the seemingly inescapable. This is the most comprehensive modern book on defensive techniques, with hundreds of instructive examples and dozens of exercises. Strategic mastermind Johan Hellsten teaches you to defend at a master level.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0931/7017/2273/files/1-vu144Q3zMoolbSae_VDLx2MVpDh0AUX8RZOk_iFhU.jpg?v=1762541979
hubner-year-by-year-volume-i-1959-1979
Hübner Year by Year: Volume I (1959-1979)

Robert Hübner (1948-2025) was one of the world’s leading players in the 1970s-1980s, reaching four world championship candidates cycles. Widely recognised as Germany’s greatest chess player since Emanuel Lasker, he reached the candidates final against Korchnoi over the 1980-1981 New Year. He was ranked number 3 in the world in July 1981, behind only Karpov and Korchnoi.

Following the success of their year by year series on Korchnoi, the winning team of Tibor Karolyi (games analysis) and Hans Renette (biography) is back with a new multi-volume series on Robert Hübner. While less information is available on his life outside chess than with Korchnoi, Hans has managed to find several contemporary sources and to interview people who knew Hübner to compile an informative portrait of Hübner the man. Some information was provided by Robert himself, although he was clearly unwell by the time this project began. In volume one, which covers the period of 1959 to 1979, we read about the early part of his career, from child prodigy to world championship candidate in the 1970-1971 cycle, when he lost narrowly to Petrosian in the quarter-final, to his gold medal on first board at the 1972 Skopje Olympiad, and ending with his shared first place in the 1979 Rio de Janeiro Interzonal.
In this series, Tibor demonstrates in particular that Hübner was one of the world’s most resilient endgame players. He was one of very few players to draw with Fischer in a difficult endgame, and he saved many lost endgames, often at critical times: he even saved them against Karpov and Kasparov. FM James Eade tells the whole story from behind the scenes of the first U.S. Senior Women’s Championship held in California. A couple of winner’s key games are annotated by IM Elliott Winslow. Remaining at the San Francisco Bay Area, from his treasure trove, Andy Ansel presents Peter Grey, a local player whose great potential could have been noticed in the late 60’s of the 20 th century and who almost never missed the Tuesday Night tournaments at the Mechanics’ Institute. Professor of psychology, Dr. Corey Butler, this time tackles the topic of competition, issuing warnings on how to avoid its dark side. Then, FM Dylan Loeb McClain showcases an array of 8-year-old prodigies whose recent results are truly astonishing, and raise many questions to which Dylan has tried to give answers. As usual, FM Carsten Hansen reviews ten newly published books, helping you discover resources for improving your chess skills, while World Correspondence Champion Jon Edwards offers valuable advice on how to combine various sources for learning chess with tech solutions and their facilities. Finally, in “A Five Question Guide,” our guest is IM Dean Ippolito, a successful chess coach.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0931/7017/2273/files/VFQdbsmnECx9j83xzQatknMcUxEQLPkN8Zjdn_wndyg.jpg?v=1763260801
us-chess-federation-luxury-paperback-scorebook
US Chess Federation Luxury Paperback Scorebook
Made in the USA!
