CLEARANCE - Karpov-Korchnoi 1978
The Inside Story of the MatchProduct Code: CB0081RB
After bitter altercations about flags and threatened walkouts, the needle match of the World Chess Championship, between Anatoly Karpov and Victor Korchnoi, began in Baguio City in the Philippines on 18 July 1978.
Would the volatile Korchnoi, defector from the Soviet Union in 1976, be able, at the age of 47, to weather the tensions and defeat the reigning champion? Karpov representing the Soviet establishment, and 20 years his junior, had performed superbly since gaining the title by default from Bobby Fischer in 1975. Would Korchnoi's new-found freedom allow him to better his 1974 performance when he lost a 24-game match with Karpov by the odd point?
Over the past months the world has followed the contrasting styles and personalities of these two great players in one of the most momentous and bitter sporting clashes of all times.
Raymond Keene, the British Grandmaster and inventor of the famous Yoghurt Counter Gambit, who helped Korchnoi to reach the final and has been his official 'second' for the match, is uniquely placed to provide the blow-by-blow, inside account of the match that all chess players have been eagerly awaiting.
