CLEARANCE - Arkhangelsk System in the Ruy LopezProduct Code: CB0352RB
The moves 1. e4 e5 2. f3 c6 3. b5 take us to the array of the Ruy Lopez, the most famous of all chess openings. First recommended by the Spanish monk Ruy Lopez in the 16th Century, its strategic wealth and complexity making it a horn of plenty for creative players, have ensured the evergreen appeal of the opening. White launches a concerted attack on the e5 pawn, trying to seize the initiative in the centre. His strong grip on the game has spurred the invention of many defenses, a promising modern one of which has been widely surveyed to write this book.
This setup was introduced into tournament praxis by players from the Russian city of Arkhangelsk only in the early 1960s. It was soon adopted by the number of then leading Polish masters, whose original ideas had a significant impact on the research of the new defense. Very soon the system was put to the test at top level, as it was employed by strong Grandmasters such as Planinc, Smejkal, Tseshkovsky, Tal, Malaniuk, Mikhalchishin, Beliavsky and others. At present the young stars, Shirov and Kamsky, are the most renowned adherents of the Arkhangelsk system.
