Endings with rook and minor piece against rook and minor piece occur very frequently, even more often than rook endings. But there is not much literature on them. The new endgame DVD fills this gap.

CHESS ENDGAMES - Rook and Minor Piece - Karsten Muller - VOLUME 9
Endgame theory forms the basis for chess. This becomes painfully clear as soon as a player has reached a clearly won endgame, yet must finally content himself with a draw because he lacks the necessary know-how.

Strategy
Queen against two rooks or three minor pieces, as well as a rook plus pawn vs two minor pieces - these are typical constellations where the material is unbalanced. In our first steps in chess we are taught about the nominal value of the pieces. The queen is equal to nine pawns; a rook to five, a minor piece is worth three pawns. This is a common sense solution aimed at teaching the beginner a system of values so that he or she does not trade a more valuable piece for a less good one. Later however, situations occur in games in which one side can trade two minor pieces (six pawns) for a rook and a pawn (also six pawns). Theoretically speaking, this should result in an equal position, but in reality one of the two sides will profit from the exchange.

The True Value of Pieces - Dejan Bojkov
In this DVD, Sam Collins offers another way. Discussing sound, aggressive lines, all with regular top-level support from GMs Tiviakov, Howell, Pavasovic and others, Collins breaks down each position into its key components and explains the core plans and ideas, together with enough theory to avoid any accidents and catch your opponents by surprise.

This is an enjoyable tour of positional play from which everyone can learn.

First Steps in Positional Play - Andrew Martin
Chess is turning into a young mans game. Time limits are faster, sessions last longer and computer databases and playing engines seem to dominate opening preparation. Add the fact that older players often have jobs and families that take most of their time and its no surprise they suffer painful defeats at the hands of spotty youths.

How to Beat Younger Players - Nigel Davies
Senior Trainer Andrew Martin breaks the subject down, with the hope of making everything clear. Attention is given to all the components that make up chess strategy, so that at the end a player will be better able to make good moves and good plans.
