Lasker's Manual of Chess is one of the greatest chess books ever written. The fact that it was first published over 80 years ago has diminished neither its relevance nor significance in today's modern chess world. Lasker was both a wonderful fighter and a deep thinker; his book is the quintessence of the exceptionally successful experiences he had over many long years, and his thoughts about them.

The main variation of the Queen's Indian arises after 1 P-Q4, N-KB3, 2 P-QB4, P-K3, 3 N-KN3, P-QN3. Since White does not threaten to play P-K4 immediately, Black is able to undertake the development of the queen side. The fianchetto of the Queen Bishop is an effort to establish control over his Q4 and K5 squares. The model games for this type of development were played by Nimzovich against Gregory and Bernstein in the period of 1913-1914.

Lines with P-KB4
There are two Sicilian lines where White plays an early P-KB4; 1 P-K4 P-QB4 2 P-KB4 which is probably inferior to the system popularised by the Dutch player Vinken - 1 P-K4 P-QB4 2 N-QB3 and 3 P-KB4. This latter system occupies most of this book. The author demonstrates the Vinken System to be a viable alternative for White in which the first player strives for a King-side attack which can so easily come off.

the English world chess champion
Howard Staunton (1810 - 22 June 1874) was an English chess master who is generally regarded as having been the world's strongest player from 1843 to 1851. He promoted a chess set of clearly distinguishable pieces of standardised shape that is still the style which must be used for competitions. He was the principal organizer of the first international chess tournament in 1851. From 1840 onwards he became a leading chess commentator, and won matches against top players of the 1840s. However, the achievement of Staunton have been neglected or even ignored by his own countrymen and this book seeks to rectify that.

It is also often reached by transposition, for example 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Bg5 (the most common move order), 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 d5 3.Nc3, or 1.Nc3 Nf6 2.d4 d5 3.Bg5. The opening was named after the German International Master Kurt Richter and later the Soviet master Gavriil Veresov, who played it frequently for over a quarter of a century. Along with the Trompowsky Attack, Colle System, London System, and Torre Attack, the Richter–Veresov Attack is one of the more common branches of the Queen's Pawn Game. The more popular Ruy Lopez opening looks like a Richter–Veresov Attack mirrored on the queenside, but the dynamics of play are quite different.

Max Euwe was World Chess Champion in the 1930s and he collaborated with International Master Kramer to write this great treatise on how to play chess middlegames. Book II of the series examines the initiative, the different types of attack on the king, the art of defense, maneuver and liquidation, and the common failings over the chessboard to which even great players are occasionally subject.

The Middlegame - BOOK 2
There is no longer any excuse for study enthusiasts familiar with the contemporary scene to remain uninformed, as I admit to have been myself, about the development of composition on the other side of the Atlantic. All is now revealed by the man most competent to do so. Walter Korn, for many years the leading American endgame columnist, traces the evolution of the endgame study. Walter Korn writes with feeling. He shares the suffering and elation of those he writes about. He has been through it all himself and his descriptive writing stems from a deep love of his subject and of the work of his compatriots. A warm hearted book.'' - an excerpt from a review by C.M. Bent in the British Chess Magazine.

Alexey Alexeyevich Troitzky (1866-1942) is considered to have been the greatest composer of chess endgame studies ever. To call him a genius is to trivialize his accomplishments, because there are many geniuses, but few can equal the output of Troitzky. In his lifetime, Troitzky composed more than one thousand chess endgame studies.

Collection of Chess Studies by Troitzky
When ''White to Play and Win'' was first published, it created a great sensation because the author, Weaver W. Adams, claimed to be able to prove that White has a win by force from the very first move, against any defense. Although the author was never able to prove his central thesis, he did prove that these lines were lethal against the average tournament chess player.

White to Play and Win PLUS Simple Chess
With Introduction and Updates from 2008
This book was originally published as The Official Blue Book and Encyclopedia of Chess. In reprinting this book, the word ''Official'' has been deleted because the official rules have since been published by FIDE. However, the rules are substantially the same, just the new rules are more complex and detailed. The author, Kenneth Harkness, was the inventor and developer of the chess rating system that is now used in every country of the world.
