In March of 1970, chess happenings on the world stage intruded into Northern California. Bobby Fischer emerged from his semi-retirement to play second board in the USSR vs Rest of the World match against former World Champion, Tigran Petrosian.

Central California Chess Voice - 1971-1976
Chess Voice had the good fortune to publish during the Golden Age of California chess; 1968 to 1985. The chess landscape in the mid to late 1960's was dominated by chess clubs and chess club leagues; tournaments, not played within a club, were intermittent.

'Chess the Hard Way'' is the autobiography of Daniel Abraham Yanofsky, who was not only Canada's first chess grandmaster buit was Canada's only grandmaster until the modern era. His career is remarkable. He was from a remote Indian town in Central Canada where there were no chess masters. Almost invariably, strong chess players only develop in places where there are strong players.

Alexey Alexeyevich Troitzky (1866-1942) is considered to have been the greatest composer of chess endgame studies ever. To call him a genius is to trivialize his accomplishments, because there are many geniuses, but few can equal the output of Troitzky. In his lifetime, Troitzky composed more than one thousand chess endgame studies.

Howard Staunton (1810 - 22 June 1874) was an English chess master who is generally regarded as having been the world's strongest player from 1843 to 1851. He promoted a chess set of clearly distinguishable pieces of standardised shape that is still the style which must be used for competitions. He was the principal organizer of the first international chess tournament in 1851. From 1840 onwards he became a leading chess commentator, and won matches against top players of the 1840s. However, the achievement of Staunton have been neglected or even ignored by his own countrymen and this book seeks to rectify that.

The main variation of the Queen's Indian arises after 1 P-Q4, N-KB3, 2 P-QB4, P-K3, 3 N-KN3, P-QN3. Since White does not threaten to play P-K4 immediately, Black is able to undertake the development of the queen side. The fianchetto of the Queen Bishop is an effort to establish control over his Q4 and K5 squares. The model games for this type of development were played by Nimzovich against Gregory and Bernstein in the period of 1913-1914.
