    Capablanca in the United Kingdom - 1911 - 1920
    Capablanca's Chess Career
    Catalog Code: B0002MV

This is the first of a projected two volume series and describes the four visits made by Capablanca to the UK in 1911, 1913, 1919 and 1920. On each visit Capablanca played simultaneous displays against local enthusiasts. The first two visits were relatively short and exhibitions were confined to London and Birmingham but in 1919, following his triumph at the Hastings Victory Congress, the Cuban went "on tour" and played in 36 displays in English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish cities. In 1920 he played at Bristol and Woolwich as part of a European tour.

Dr Fiala's research has unearthed 123 of Capablanca's simultaneous games, many never published in book form before, together with descriptions of the events taken from local newspapers of the time. This carefully researched book will be of interest to chess historians.

Garry Kasparov on My Great Predecessors - VOLUME V
    Korchoi and Karpov
    Catalog Code: B0136EM

This book, the fifth in Garry Kasparov's magnificent history of the World Chess Championship, catalogues the ''post-Fischer'' period in the 1970's and early 1980's. This period was dominated by Anatoly Karpov (world champion from 1975-1985) and his three-time challenger, Viktor Korchnoi. Anatoly Karpov gained the right to challenge Bobby Fischer for the world title by winning through the Candidates series in 1974. As is well known, Fischer refused to defend the title and in 1975 Karpov became champion by default. Although he did not have to contest a Championship match to gain the title, Karpov proved that he was a worthy champion by winning virtually every major tournament over the next decade.

´╗┐This sampling of Benjamin's games will give the reader a good idea of the style and technique he has used to win titles. A tremendous counter-puncher, Benjamin's attacks often explode from seemingly blockaded positions. His pieces seem to be retreating only to turn and bravely attack the foe. Indeed, his middlegame style is distinctly individual, relying on strong endgame play to take advantage when his late middlegame attacks do not.

How Garry Kasparov Changed the World of Chess
    Catalog Code: CB0018RB

May 1997. It was the match that stunned the world: Chess Champion Garry Kasparov was beaten by the massively parallel computer, Beep Blue - an opponent that Kasparov had vanquished in 1996. But unlike his human opponents, Deep Blue could be redesigned in the intervening year. The result: the first "player" - computer or human - ever to win a match against the chess genius. Kasparov's own move-by-move analysis of these games in "A New Era" shows just how much IBM has improved the breed, and how they were spoiling for a fight in the momentous rematch. A must read for anyone who is passionate about the world's most enduring game of strategy and wits, A New Era takes the reader inside the world of professional chess, offering insiders' insights (including those of Kasparov himself) into the politics and psychology of competition at the top levels of play, whether against human or machine.
