The Move by Move series provides an ideal format for the keen chessplayer to improve their game. While reading you are continually challenged to answer probing questions – a method that greatly encourages the learning and practicing of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of chess knowledge.

The French Defence is one of the most popular and reliable responses to 1.e4. This volume presents three contrasting ways of meeting White’s aggressive opening system: 7...cxd4 leading to the notorious Winawer Poisoned Pawn; 7...0–0 8.Bd3 f5, a solid yet strategically complex system; and 7...0–0 8.Bd3 Nbc6, which leads to a tense, full-blooded battle.

Although the amount of theory has expanded in recent years, the French often leads to positions where positional and strategic understanding prove more relevant than long sequences of computer-generated moves. Grandmaster Repertoire 14 - The French Defence 1 introduces the Winawer Variation after the opening moves 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4, and provides expert recommendations against all of White's major possibilities

    Saint Petersburg 1895/96
    Catalog Code: B0025CA

With the conclusion of the great Hastings Tournament in September of 1895, it became apparent that a new chess star of the first magnitude had appeared: Harry Nelson Pillsbury. His debut was dramatic and striking, for this virtual unknown had eclipsed the best players of that time with a combination of élan and grace. However, the revelation of a new world-class player brought with it the natural questions of both skeptics and admirers, some demanding verification and others eager to see their hero demonstrate his mastery with further verve. The five highest players at Hastings were invited for the St. Petersburg tournament: Pillsbury, Chigorin, Lasker, Tarrasch and Steinitz. Tarrasch declined, the others accepted. Each of these players had plenty of reason to fight hard for first place in Saint Petersburg 1895/96. It is one of the strongest chess tournaments ever held.

CLEARANCE - Chess Explained - The English Opening
A New Approach to Understanding the Chess Openings
    Catalog Code: B0094GB

Chess Explained is a new series of books about chess openings. They are not theoretical works in the traditional sense, but more a series of lessons from a chess expert with extensive over-the-board experience with an opening. You will gain an understanding of the opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have.
