Best Chess Set for the Money I Have Ever Owned
Rating

Everything about this set is superb. First - the proportion and design is absolutely top shelf to the point that this is the set you would expect to see in an International Grandmaster's home. Second - the size is so tuned in to what is neither grotesque or puny such that the most standard board sizes that people enjoy playing on with no compromise (2 1/4, 2 3/8, and 2.5) really work well from the smallest to largest board. On the classic wooden board with gloss finish that has green and white theme - this set looks like a very expensive premium set of which has no shortfalls in quality or appearence. I am more pleased with this set than any other as far as what looks totally serious for playing with either casual context - or it would look so good - there would be talk if some Grandmaster brought it to a tournament. These pieces really show off the beauty of wooden chessboard and look like the front and center design for a chess set - such that all other chess sets - no matter what size, how ornate, how innovative and modern, how great the material (like ivory, glass, metal, or any exotic wood) - look like a distortion of the intended "archtype" or "father of all chess sets". I got the black and white color set and I prefer that for representing "black and white" even though for some of my other sets I have exotic colors. Apart from portable sets in bags with roll up boards that follow themes (like my shark board with blue bag, blue clock, and blue and natural guilded pieces) - I have three main chess sets: 1. A giant Fischer-Spassky set with 6 inch kings and I use a 3 inch square size board. 2. My "deep study" set designed for minimum eye strain and long hours of examination that has dark brown squares, black squares , 2.5 inch square size, and is in satin finish with 4 inch king pieces that are very large in satin burgandy and natural. The set I use with these pieces is 2.25 inch square gloss green and white - and I call it "The Grandmaster Set".

If you looked for "Chess Set" in the dictionary - this should be it

I like exotic sets and unusual color boards and pieces - but what makes that so much fun is normally I just play on a green standard vinyl roll up board with standard black and white pieces - you know - the cheap triple weighted 3.75 inch King height that comes in so many different color options. Well - I have a nice wood board with green and light wood squares and I consider it essentially a "deluxified" version of the standard plastic chess sets with vinyl roll up boards you see everyone using at chess clubs. I thought about what pieces would really look the best that fit this classic popular style and make that my "standard chess set". With ebonized and natural satin finish - and a magnificent Staunton design (I pay very close attention to if the Knights look good - and too plain is not what I want - and too fancy usually means they are subject to being easily damaged) - and this beautiful wood set with the 4.4 inch King height seems to be not only smack dead center for representing the true Staunton tradition - but excels in that subjective but important "aethestic value" and has just the strong "chess charisma" I was looking for. It looks iconic on the green and natural square board - and has an elegance that is mind-blowing. It is not some freaky style set made for novelty appeal - but what I think Grandmaster chess players would prefer to use to play their games. Beautiful and wonderful for the price point.

I bought this set- boxwood and ebonised boxwood some 15 years ago. Sadly it recently got lost in an expat's move between countries and when I can afford it I will be replacing it with the same. It is absolutely perfect to the touch - in feel, weight, looks, and weight. Very simply put, it is the very best set I have ever had- excellent value, brilliantly executed and each time I used it, a sublime pleasure.
