      Empire Chess - Sample Disc
      Catalog Code: DVDSAMPLE-EP

Too many games end in either premature draw offers or resignations. Fighting in the endgame is a skill that can help players rack up those extra points. Alisa Melekhina analyzes two of her own games, one in which she drew a pawn down, and another in which she pulled off a win in an equal rook ending. The viewers are led through four major principles that can be applied in their own endgames: mentally adapt to a change in the position; resist by preventing your opponent from executing their only winning plan; take advantage of complacency; make your opponent make decisions. Even if a position is theoretically drawn, players should not discount the practical chances that they can create.

      American Chess Art
      Catalog Code: CB0038CD

There is no longer any excuse for study enthusiasts familiar with the contemporary scene to remain uninformed, as I admit to have been myself, about the development of composition on the other side of the Atlantic. All is now revealed by the man most competent to do so. Walter Korn, for many years the leading American endgame columnist, traces the evolution of the endgame study. Walter Korn writes with feeling. He shares the suffering and elation of those he writes about. He has been through it all himself and his descriptive writing stems from a deep love of his subject and of the work of his compatriots. A warm hearted book." - an excerpt from a review by C.M. Bent in the British Chess Magazine.

What isn't so well known is that he was also one of the best chess players in the U.S.,despite having a playing style that was highly flawed. Like his problems, Sam would often try to create fantastic combinations over the board during his games, rather than simplifying and going for the win.

This book, edited by Grandmaster Andrew Soltis, presents 58 of Sam Loyd's problems for your consideration. In addition to the puzzles, the author extensively discusses the man behind the puzzles.

As I also remarked in my review, the Soviet concept of a beginner is clearly wider than ours, and to make the book even wider in its scope and appeal I have added some supplementary material. I must confess that I have had some misgivings about the correct rendering of certain technical terms, but in the absence of an internationally accepted terminology each translator must take his own line on such matters. Also in translating certain extracts quoted from authors whose books are available in English I have followed the Russian text in those rare cases where it differs slightly from the English version. I trust that this book will give real pleasure to its readers and help those players who wish to learn to play combinations.
