Product Description
"Created to commemorate the legendary Hastings 1895 Tournament, it combines the form, broad bases, board presence and exquisite craftsmanship of the time period with a masterful Knight designed by the Maestro, Frank A. Camaratta, Jr."

The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Hastings Series Chess set. This full tournament-sized Plastic Chess set features a 3.875" King with a 1.75" diameter base. The Chess pieces are very heavily weighted with felt base pads on the undersides of the Chessmen.

The design of the Hastings Series Chess set combined the form, broad bases, board presence and craftsmanship of the Staunton Pattern Chess sets of the time period with an original Knight that was designed by the Maestro, Frank A. Camaratta, Jr. The Knight design reflects the adage that Chess is War, resulting in a truly ferocious beast ready to do battle on the Chess board. The Knight has attitude and is one of the Maestro's proudest creations.

History of the Chess Pieces
As with all of our Chess sets, the Hastings Series exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close! The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton over 10 years ago. The Hastings 1895 Chess Tournament, which took place in Hastings, England from August 5 to September 2, has been described by many Chess historians as one of the greatest tournaments of all time and a milestone in the history of Chess. The tournament featured all of the greatest players of the era, defining it as the first "super-tournament" in modern terms. The participants of the match (in the order in which they finished) were Harry Nelson Pillsbury, Mikhail Chigorin, Emmanuel Lasker, Siegbert Tarrasch, Wilhelm Steinitz, Emanuel Schiffers, Curt von Bardeleben, Richard Teichmann, Carl Schlechter, Joseph Henry Blackburne, Carl Walbrodt, Amos Burn, David Janowski, James Mason, Henry Bird, Isidor Gunsberg, Adolf Albin, Georg Marco, William Pollock, Jacques Mieses, Samuel Tinsley and Beniamino Vergani. Pillsbury, a young American unknown in Europe, was the surprise winner with 16.5/21 points ahead of Chigorin (16) and Lasker (15.5). Following the success of the event, the Hastings tournament would become an annual feature. Today such competitions are conducted annually at various places.

The Hastings Series Plastic Chess Pieces - 3.875" King

The knight in this set is astounding! From the spiky, wavy mane to the articulate ears, nose, and even teeth, to the balanced neck structure, to the serious, fierce (but also fearful) expression, this knight's esthetic qualities are an example of great artistic design execution.

I measure all of my chess sets. The manufacturing variances from House of Staunton for plastic chess sets are generally quite consistent for shape (less than 5% difference in dimensions) and consistent enough for weight (less than 14% difference). If you believe those variations are poor, I encourage you to start measuring things for yourself and comparing those results with published specifications. It will be enlightening. Here are my measurements for this chess set (tolerances +/- .25mm and +/- .5 grams):

    -King Base Diameter: 45.5mm
-King Height (not including basepad): 98mm
-Weight of Whole Set (including extra queens, if applicable): 1143g
-Does the Set Include Extra Queens?: Yes
-Board Square Size for King Base 75% to 80% of Square: 2-1/4in AND 2-3/8in
    -USCF Tournament Suitable: Yes

These are of similar quality to the Collector and Marshall sets, but slightly larger and slightly lighter, but feel and look great. The knights are beautiful.
