"In celebration of the 40th (Ruby) anniversary of 1972 World Chess Championship between Boris Spassky (RUS) and Robert J. (Bobby) Fischer, The House of Staunton is proud to offer the most accurate production of one of the most historically important chess sets and board combinations ever produced."
The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Spassky Fischer Commemorative Chess set and Board Combination. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 3.75" King with a 1.75"diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade Boxwood and Genuine Ebony. All 34 of the chess pieces are heavily weighted and feature ruby-colored English leather base pads with the Spassky Fischer logo embossed in striking gold. The design of the Spassky Fischer set is the most accurate and highest quality reproduction of the Chess set ever produced - Even Boris Spassky would have a hard time telling the commemorative set from the original! The chess set pattern has been designed to withstand years of use (and abuse), as it lacks many of the ornate details commonly found on chess Sets that can be susceptible to damage in the heat of battle. For example, the chess set features reinforced Pawn collars and oversized Rook ramparts for unmatched durability. The Reykjavik II Series Chess set is ideal for those that are interested in both the historical importance of the game of Chess, as well as those looking for an attractive Chess set that is both economical and durable.
As with all of our Chess sets, the Spassky Fischer Commemorative Chessmen exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!
The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton over 10 years ago.
The Mahogany Premium Chess Box is lined in green billiard cloth, divided and features brass quadrant hinges and a lock & key. It features both the Spassky Fischer Logo and the Set's Registration Number laser engraved in the lid.
Now Available From The House of StauntonIncluded with the purchase of these Chessmen is our new Original Manufacturer's Plaque. Bobby Fischer & Boris Spassky
In 1972, Robert James "Bobby" Fischer and Boris Spassky battled for the World Chess Championship in the most widely followed match in the history of Chess. It was a disastrous start for Fischer, who lost the first 2 games in strange fashion. The first game was lost by an uncharacteristic blunder in a clearly drawn endgame. The second game was lost by forfeit, when Fischer refused to play the game in a dispute over the playing conditions. When the tournament organizers refused to give into his demands and the match appeared destined for a forfeit victory for the reigning Champion, Spassky yielded since it would have been a hollow victory. The third game was moved to a back room, away from the cameras whose presence had upset Fischer during the first game.
The match continued and Bobby Fischer fought his way back and decisively defeated Spassky by a final score of 12.5 - 8.5, having won 7 and losing only 1 of the remaining games. Fischer's win was a momentous victory for the United States during the time of the Cold War. The iconoclastic American almost single-handedly defeating the mighty Soviet chess establishment that had dominated world chess for the past quarter-century.
The Chessmen that were used during the match were produced by the legendary firm Jaques of London.
