When you are considering purchasing an item that is made out of wood, it is important to remember that wood is a natural material, and as such, there can be slight variations in its physical characteristics. Variations in grain pattern and intensity, color, hue and texture can occur - even within the same piece of wood. This is especially true for such exotic woods as Cocobolo, Blood Rosewood, Padauk and Rosewood. We've had many customers ask ”shouldn't all boxwood pieces (or ebony pieces) look exactly the same? The answer to this question is an emphatic no! And the reason is that the physical characteristics of a piece of wood tell the life story of the tree from which it came. There are countless factors, including mineral availability, access to water and sunlight, and physical stresses that influence the physical characteristics of wood. Like a snowflake, no two pieces of wood could ever be the same. We at the House of Staunton believe that it is this natural variation that makes each chess piece a truly unique work of art, adding to its overall attractiveness and character. Each House of Staunton Wooden Chess Set is "one of a kind" and should be appreciated as such. After all, it is the way that nature intended it!
