International Master Bryan Smith explains Nimzo Indian Defense strategies with real games. This hypermodern opening was developed by Grandmaster Aron Nimzowitsch who introduced it to master-level chess in the early 20th century. Unlike most Indian openings the NimzoIndian does not involve an immediate fianchetto, although Black often follows up with ...b6 and ...Bb7. By pinning White's knight Black prevents the threatened 4.e4 and seeks to inflict doubled pawns on White. White will attempt to create a pawn centre and develop his pieces to prepare for an assault on the Black position.

A Complete System for Black Against the English Opening - Chess Lecture - Volume 65
      Catalog Code: DVD0065CL

The English derives its name from the English (unofficial) World Champion, Howard Staunton (1843). The English has caught on in the twentieth century and is now recognized as a solid opening that may be used to reach both classical and hypermodern positions. Although many lines of the English have a distinct character, the opening is often used as a transpositional device in much the same way as 1.Nf3 – to avoid such highly regarded responses to 1.d4 as the Nimzo-Indian and Grunfeld defences – and is considered reliable and flexible.

Fundamentals of Isolated Queen Pawn Positions - Chess Lecture - Volume 64
      Catalog Code: DVD0064CL

An isolated pawn or “isolani” is a pawn which has no friendly pawn on an adjacent file. Isolated pawns are usually thought of as a weakness because they cannot be protected by other pawns. Many textbook openings create at least one isolated pawn but are nevertheless accepted as orthodox because of the advantages they create. With an isolated pawn you can have improved development and associated opportunities for counter play that offset or even outweigh the weaknesses associated with the pawn's isolation.

Modern Themes in the Benoni - 2 DVDs - Chess Lecture - Volume 66
      Catalog Code: DVD0066CL

The Modern Benoni was invented in 1927 by Frank Marshall at the New York Chess Tournament. Marshall played it twice, first for a draw against Capablanca, and again later losing to Aron Nimzowitch whom labeled the Modern Benoni an "unfortunate extravagance" in his annotations. In the 1950s interest in the system revived, as the King's Indian Defense gained in popularity among Soviet players and their investigations branched into related opening systems such as the Benoni. The imbalance inherent in the pawn structure of the Modern Benoni and the counter-chances this implies for Black appeals to aggressive players.
