The Literature of Chess

Product Code: B0008MF

Publisher: McFarland
Author: John Graham
Year of Publication: 1984

Pages: 250
Notation Type: Figurine (FAN)

Through the fortunate chance of having developed a notation to record actual games, chess has become very much a literary game. This has resulted in a veritable flood of books, with more being written about chess than any other sport. Hence, for the average chess player who would like to improve, the choice among such a vast number of books can be bewildering. The author has undertaken to review those books written by the great writers of the game and to select recommendations.

The preface includes a brief biography on the history of chess literature back to 900 A.D. The book then surveys the available books in several areas (introductory texts, openings, middle games, endings, biographies, game collections, chess lore, and problems) and provides short, important excerpts from each book. A basis is thus provided for choosing books according to the reader's interest. The excerpts themselves provide interesting material to make this a readable book of its own merit for those non-players interested in chess and tournament players alike. An index is provided in the back.

Note that the excerpts from each book are preserved in the original book's notation, so one will find a mix of English Descriptive notation and Algebraic.
