Book Description

The Delights of Chess is a collection of witty, entertaining and sometimes even instructive articles by Assiac, who was Chess Editor of the New Statesman in England and who wrote more than 400 columns for that publication. He previously wrote Adventures in Chess in 1951. The American edition was published as The Pleasures of Chess.

The book is filled with amusing anecdotes involving famous players, including Nimzowitsch, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Reshevsky and Lombardy. He provides amazing blunders and interesting positions. His book is dedicated to "chess widows", women who have lost their husbands not to another woman but to the game of chess. It contains a lot of great cartoons of concerned women trying to recover their husbands. Although this book has been reprinted previously, we think it has improved on other reprints because we have used a rare and difficult to find first edition of this book, published by MacGibbon & Kee in London 1960.

    Author: John Nunn
Year of Publication: 2008 Pages: 240
    Notation Type: Figurine (FN)

Book Description John Nunn is one of the most highly regarded chess writers in the world. He has carefully selected thirty modern games to help the reader understand the most important aspects of chess and to illustrate modern chess principles in action. Virtually every move is explained using words that everyone can understand. Jargon is avoided as far as possible. Almost all the examples are taken from the 1990s and show how key ideas are handled by the grandmasters of today. The emphasis is on general principles that readers will be able to use in their own games, and detailed analysis is only given where it is necessary. Each game contains many lessons, but to guide the reader through the most important ideas in each phase of the game, the thirty games are grouped thematically into those highlighting opening, middlegame and endgame themes. About the Author(s) John Nunn is a grandmaster from England. He has won four individual gold medals and three team silver medals at Chess Olympiads. In the Chess World Cup of 1988/9, he finished sixth overall, ahead of several former World Champions. He is arguably the most highly acclaimed chess writer in the world, with two of his books receiving the prestigious British Chess Federation Book of the Year Award.

  • How to Play Dynamic Chess
Size the Moment and Take Full Advantage of Your Chances!
Chess is fundamentally a dynamic game. Each move changes the situation and the possibilities for both sides. No piece is ever identically as valuable as any other, and their scope changes from move to move. The current generation of supergrandmasters plays unrelentingly dynamic chess, but a great deal of chess literature still deals with chess as if it were a predominantly static game. Much traditional chess teaching is based around rules of thumb that might work well 'on average' or in 'typical' situations, but these rules may not equip players for the specific and sometimes exceptional situations that they face in their games.
