HAVE you ever wanted to play chess with the masters? Reinfeld shows you how. Now you can play against some of the world's greatest masters, in the privacy of your study with no annoying “kibitzers” around, and with no time limit to harry you! An easily understood grading system shows you just where you stand in matching your skills against the masters.

Chess by Yourself is similar to Solitaire Chess. The difference is that in Solitaire Chess the reader imagines himself to be playing the white pieces. The reader covers up the moves with a sheet of paper and then guesses White's next move and writes it down. Then, the reader moves down the sheet of paper revealing the next move that was actually played. The reader is then awarded points depending on whether the move he guessed was right or wrong, strong or weak. White always wins

In Chess by Yourself the reader is to go one step further, because he plays both sides of the board. He gets points for guessing both White's next move and then Black's next move. Either side may win. At the end of the game, the reader totals his score. Depending on how many points he got he is awarded a ranking of Master, Excellent, Good or Fair. The reader can also get extra credit by guessing follow-up moves in variations that were not actually played. The author, Fred Reinfeld, has selected ten games for this test. All are exciting sacrificial games. All ten games are deeply annotated with an explanation given for every move and points awarded for alternative moves that were not played.

  • Understanding Chess Move by Move
A Top-Class Grandmaster Explains Step-By-Step How Chess Games are Won

    Publisher: Gambit
    Author: John Nunn
Year of Publication: 2008 Pages: 240
    Notation Type: Figurine (FN)

Book Description John Nunn is one of the most highly regarded chess writers in the world. He has carefully selected thirty modern games to help the reader understand the most important aspects of chess and to illustrate modern chess principles in action. Virtually every move is explained using words that everyone can understand. Jargon is avoided as far as possible. Almost all the examples are taken from the 1990s and show how key ideas are handled by the grandmasters of today. The emphasis is on general principles that readers will be able to use in their own games, and detailed analysis is only given where it is necessary. Each game contains many lessons, but to guide the reader through the most important ideas in each phase of the game, the thirty games are grouped thematically into those highlighting opening, middlegame and endgame themes. About the Author(s) John Nunn is a grandmaster from England. He has won four individual gold medals and three team silver medals at Chess Olympiads. In the Chess World Cup of 1988/9, he finished sixth overall, ahead of several former World Champions. He is arguably the most highly acclaimed chess writer in the world, with two of his books receiving the prestigious British Chess Federation Book of the Year Award.

Attacking the Kings on Opposite Sides
Both players are gunning for each other's kings. Whose attack will break through first? This is a typical scenario in chess games. In such tense battles where one slip can be fatal, often it's a case of 'who dares wins'. But it's not enough to throw your pieces up the board and hope for the best. To succeed you need to acquire sophisticated attacking and defensive skills. The good news is that they can easily be learned, remembered and put into practice.
