An Active Opening Repertorie for White
      Catalog Code: B0073EM

An active opening repertoire for White! The English is a sophisticated opening which is very popular at all levels of chess: from up-and-coming players to World Champions such as Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik. It has many attractions, including flexibility and diversity: White can play either aggressively or quietly, and positions are rich in both strategy and tactics.

      San Antonio 1972
Church's Fried Chicken First International Chess Tournament
      Catalog Code: B0073IS

San Antonio 1972 was either the strongest chess tournament ever played in the history of the United States or, if not the very strongest, then second only to New York 1924. What makes this book especially great is not merely was it a great tournament with great players, but that the players annotated some of their own games. In this day and age, there are millions of games in the chess databases, but annotated games are increasingly hard to find.

      Catalog Code: B0074EM

A Dynamic and Flexible Repertoire for Black! The Kan is an ideal choice as an opening weapon against 1. e4, as it is one of the easiest variations of the Sicilian to learn and play. This is because, unlike some variations of the Sicilian, you don't need to memorize loads of opening theory in order to be successful.

      Fighting the French
      A New Concept
      Catalog Code: B0074EU

Nowadays the French Defence 1...e6 is one of the most popular openings in response to 1.e4. I'd like to suggest a new concept of combating it. White plays 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 and then deploys his pieces according to the scheme Ngf3, Bd3, c3, 0-0, against almost anything that Black may play. This will usually lead to exchanges in the centre and the appearance of an isolated queen's pawn for White.

      The King's Indian
      A Complete Black Repertoire
      Catalog Code: B0075EU

The King's Indian Defence is probably the most romantic response to 1.d4. It has survived the test of time and has been played at the highest level even to the present day. Black gives his opponent complete freedom of choice in how to control the center and just develops quietly within his King's Indian household, relying on his powerful fianchettoed bishop.

Mastering the Chess Openings - VOLUME 2
Unlock the Mysteries of the Modern Chess Openings
      Catalog Code: B0076GB

For most chess-players, opening study is sheer hard work. It is hard to know what is important and what is not, and when specific knowledge is vital, or when a more general understanding is sufficient. Tragically often, once the opening is over, a player won't know what plan to follow, or even understand why his pieces are on the squares on which they sit. John Watson seeks to help chess-players achieve a more holistic and insightful view of the openings. In his previous books on chess strategy, he explained vital concepts that had previously been the domain only of top-class players.

The name "Staunton" has become so closely associated with chess that the words have become virtually synonymous. All modern tournament chess games are required to be played with Staunton chess pieces. The First International Chess Tournament, London 1851, was organized by Staunton. The leading distributor of chess books and equipment in the USA has taken the name "House of Staunton".

      Play the Grunfeld
Detailed Coverage of this Kasparov Favourite
      Catalog Code: B0077EM

The Grunfeld is an exciting and dynamic answer to 1. d4, and has become very popular at all levels of chess. A major reason for this is that it has been a long-time favorite of the World's strongest-ever chess player, Garry Kasparov, who used it many times in his numerous World Championship battles. The Grunfeld very much relies on the principles of the hyper-modern school of chess: Black allows White to erect an impressive-looking center on the assumption that in the long run it could prove to be more of a liability than an asset.

      Catalog Code: B0078GB

Ever since Nimzowitsch introduced his flexible, dynamic defence to the queen's pawn, debate has raged over White's best reply. Many variations have been in and out of fashion, but one line in particular has proved an enduring weapon - the sound and solid 4 e3 line, known as the Rubinstein Variation. The 4 e3 Nimzo is extraordinarily rich in strategy. All manner of different central pawn-structures can arise, such as the blocked centre characteristic of the Hübner Variation and a variety of IQP positions.

      Flank Openings
      Catalog Code: B0078IS

Traditional chess openings emphasize control of the center. Flank Openings are opening systems first developed by such players as Reti and Nimzowitsch in which the player of the white pieces concedes control of the center to Black, but then seeks to undermine the center and cause it to collapse with attacks from the sides. Grandmaster Raymond Keene explains the concepts and ideas behind these chess opening systems.

Howard Staunton - The English World Chess Champion

Howard Staunton (1810 - 22 June 1874) was an English chess master who is generally regarded as having been the world's strongest player from 1843 to 1851. He promoted a chess set of clearly distinguishable pieces of standardised shape that is still the style which must be used for competitions. He was the principal organizer of the first international chess tournament in 1851. From 1840 onwards he became a leading chess commentator, and won matches against top players of the 1840s. However, the achievement of Staunton have been neglected or even ignored by his own countrymen and this book seeks to rectify that.

Grivas provides a full and detailed repertoire for White against five important openings: the Grunfeld, King's Indian, Benoni, Benko and Modern. In each case, he has recommended a line in which he has a wealth of experience, and has played a significant personal role in developing over many years. The recommendations are geared towards posing Black unconventional problems: your opponents will not be able to churn out lengthy memorized variations, but will need to solve problems at the board in positions that are somewhat different in character from those normally reached in these openings.

This flexible system can allow Black to arrange his pieces in several different ways. Catalog Code: B0083BT

The Benko Gambit is the perfect choice for players who want to make their opponents suffer. It's not all plain sailing for Black, however. This provides Black with a complete repertoire featuring original, computer-checked analysis with complete games to highlight the key ideas.
