The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a beautiful finish.

As with all of our Chess sets, the Royale Series Chessmen exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!

The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton over 10 years ago.

  • San Francisco 1995 GM Invitational Tournament
Organized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations' charter in San Francisco in 1945, the tournament combined playing strength and diversity in an unprecedented fashion.

The roaster of stars spanned generations, crossed political and economic boundaries, and included the women's World Champion, Xie Jun of China, and history's strongest African American chess player, Grandmaster Maurice Ashley of New York. Whether young or old, man or woman, communist or capitalist, there was someone for everyone.

These chmapions from the former Soviet Union, China, England, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and the United States vied for supremacy for two grueling weeks. They produced some of the finest fighting chess ever witnessed in this country, and their analysis of the games fill these pages. It was only fitting that such a competitive event was ultimately won by the greatest fighter of them all, Viktor Korchnoi.

  • A Black Defensive System with 1... d6
Grandmaster Soltis blends this defensive 1..d6 move into a coherent defensive system answering whatever white throws at black. This move frequently transposes into the sharp, attacking, ultra-dynamic King's Indian Defense when played against 1.d4. Against 1.e4, the Pirc(or sometimes also the Modern Defense) arises, bringing a very flexible setup which can vary wild, attacking chess to solid, positional maneuvering. 1..d6 is a flexible way to combat any white first move.

  • The Trompowsky Attack
One of the most dynamic and attacking of all chess openings, the search for new ideas in the Trompowsky has gone beyond the rare and bizarre into the realm of the unorthodox and even bizarre. Somewhere in between lies a widely misunderstood and often mishandled device known as the Trompowsky Attack. Still a relatively young and evolving opening, this really took off in the 1980's and early 90's. This dynamic, attacking system has become a staple in the repertoires of many GM's. Of particular note, England's Julian Hodgson is often credited as the leading innovator of new, fresh Trompowsky ideas

  • Winning with the Pirc
The Pirc Defense is back in favor 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 followed by 3..g6. The problem of Black's counterplay has been solved. You must be ready to play Black's thrust in the center with the popular ..e5. Then there are other plans depending on what White does. Against some setups Black must counter with ..c5, then at other times play ..c6 followed by ..b5. We give you that analysis so you can set back and hope someone plays 1.e4 against you.

  • King's Indian Defense: Yugoslav Variation 6 ...c5
There is no reason that the variation 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.g3 Bg7 4.Bg2 0-0 5.Nf3 d6 6.0-0 c5 fell out of fashion. Soltis proves this by giving you excellent analysis and strategy in this variation. He brings back a 1950's variation to surprise your opponents. This system has a bit of a Benoni feel to it by attacking white's center with 6..c5 instead of 6..e5. This should be called the Gligoric system since it was the veteran GM Svetozar Gligoric who first demonstrated Black's resources most successfully. This system is a dangerous surprise weapon in the King's Indian that can be employed at all levels.

  • Controversial Samisch King's Indian
The Samisch variation is commonly recognized as being the sharpest way of meeting the popular King's Indian Defence, although in its modern use by White, one is just as likely to see positional queenside play as any deadly assault on the black king. In this innovative opening book, Grandmaster Chris War takes a look at its transformation over time.
