"An exact reproduction of the Sutton Coldfield Chessmen, one of the most popular Chess sets on the English playing circuit during the 1920s."

The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Margate 1923 Series Chess set. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 4.0" King with a 1.67"diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a beautiful finish. The design of the Margate 1923 Chess set is an exact reproduction of the Sutton Coldfield Staunton Chessmen that were very popular in England during the 1920s.

The most striking aspect of the Margate 1923 Series Chess set is the fact that the Chessmen include 2 distinctive sets of Knights! The actual Knights from the Sutton Coldfield Chessmen were a stylized representation of a Horse head's and are quite different from what Chess players have come to expect from a Staunton Pattern Chess set. In an effort to satisfy all Chess Collectors, those that demand historical accuracy and those that demand traditional Staunton styling, The House of Staunton has decided to include BOTH styles of Knights with these Chessmen. Each set comes with 8 Knights in total, 4 (2 Black / 2 White) Knights of the Sutton Coldfield Pattern and 4 Traditional Staunton Knights from the 1920s.

As with all of our Chess sets, the Championship Series Chessmen exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!

The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton over 10 years ago. .

Traditional Staunton-style Knight

Circa 1923

The Margate 1923 Commemorative Chessmen Comes with TWO different Knight styles, as shown above. The Knight on the left is a Traditional Staunton-style Knight from the early 1920s and the Knight on the Right is the Original Knight from the Sutton Coldfield Chessmen. Because of the unusual styling of the original Knight, The House of Staunton is including BOTH Knights with these Chessmen

The author has undertaken to review those books written by the great writers of the game and to select recommendations.

Great chess contests have often had resonances extending beyond the 64 squares. The Fischer v Spassky match was played during the Cold War with both champions being perceived as the finest products of their respective ideologies.
